Devotions
For anybody that has ever listened to Stephen Kendrick talk, one of the big things he talks about for any Christian movie is that they need to be in the word of God each day. On the set of "The Faith Line" we are doing this with a daily devotion and prayer. Below is a devotion and prayer from a few days ago. All the devotions were written by my grandpa.
Are You Without Sin?
"And such were some of you: but you are washed, you are sanctified, you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." 1st Corinthians 6:11
In reading the video script, I noted how many times certain characters were tempted to skip church and attend "special practice" for the track team. There were others who refused to do that. When this happens, there are times when, those, who don't skip church, develop an attitude of being better than the others. The Apostle Paul, in the above verse, reminds us that we all are sinners, so we had best be careful when we look at others.
Before the above verses, Paul lists a number of sins. These are stealing, coveting, drunkenness, extortioners, sexual sins, and the like. Then he reminds everyone "And such were some of you." Now Paul is beginning to rub me the wrong way. He includes me and I don't like that. But if we are guilty of one sin, the Bible says we are guilty of all. The track runners who don't go to the special practice don't seem to be doing that. Even though that is true, they need the reminder that they aren't any better than the others. Why? Because "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
What then makes us different? It is recognizing what has made us different. It isn't because we don't sin. It isn't because we are perfect, it is only because, "we are washed, sanctified, justified in the name of the Lord Jesus." The Holy Spirit has done this through the Word and Sacraments He has given to the church. God did it in Christ Jesus. That is cause for joy and reason for us to be willing to witness to others in a positive way, not in boasting. May God grant this to you in Christ Jesus.
Prayer: Lord help me never to put others down, but to help pick them up by my kind words and actions as You have done for me. In Christ Jesus, I pray. Amen.
